If you have ever wondered why people tag their titles with random brackets, here is a little guide to filter the posts you want to see from a community!
In case you aren’t interested in seeing some posts, you can filter them using the userscript I linked in the post.
To install it you only need a userscript manager extension like any of the following:
- Violentmonkey: Chrome | Firefox -> Open source userscript manager extension.
- Tampermonkey: Chrome | Firefox -> One of the most popular userscript managers, but is not open source.
…Then you just go to the script link and install it:
The userscript also has some extra features like enabling you to mark you posts as NSFW by default even if your instance doesn’t offer the option, unblur NSFW thumbnails, auto open media post previews, and fix some broken video previews (ever seen one of those “videos” with the green circle play icon?).
Back to filtering… If you for example don’t want to see yuri, you could add the filters “F/F”, “L/L”, “F/L”, “L/F”, or if you don’t want yaoi “M/M”, “S/M”, “M/S”, “[M]”, “[MM]” (you’d add them without the quotation marks).
These are just examples, but you can also filter by the optional tags (like the ones we may add between {}'s).
If instead you want to filter for things you do want to see, you can just use the search page, filter by community, and search for the tags (For example, if you only want to see animated ones in here, you could search for “{Animated}”).
Filtering on mobile
Lastly, if you are on mobile and you want to filter tags, you can use an app that supports this feature. An example for android would be Eternity, which is based on infinity for reddit. It’s still on early access, but it works good enough to be similar to other apps like jerboa.
In Eternity you can filter tags by going to settings > filter posts > tap the “+” button > add the tags you don’t like on the “excluded keywords” input text > save.
After creating the filter you have to tap the filter you just created and select “apply to” and choose to apply to “home” and to “subreddit”, leaving it empty so that it applies to all communities.
If you know of some other apps or want to share some for iOS feel free to do so and I’ll add it here.
I really hope lemmy introduces a proper tagging system in the future: You should be able create multiple “tag groups” for a community (or even instance wide) as a moderator. And for every “tag group” you should be a able to set a maximum amount of tags that can be chosen from this group, or be able to make it mandatory to choose a tag from a “tag group”.
Sounds really interesting, you should post in !thatwasuseful@burggit.moe!
