A contrarian isn’t one who always objects - that’s a confirmist of a different sort. A contrarian reasons independently, from the ground up, and resists pressure to conform.

  • I assumed it would be obvious from my first post that I don’t live in the US when I mentioned living comfortably on 35k a year in a thread about needing 100k to be considered middle class in the US. Clearly, it wasn’t obvious, so I clarified it in my third reply (not the fifth, as you claimed), four hours before your first message to me. Do you want me to apologize for not anticipating this potential confusion from the start, or what exactly are you after here? How about just saying, “Sorry, I missed your message where you said you live in the EU”?

  • I heard a podcast guest refer to herself as a “professional opinion haver,” and even though I’m not a professional, I sure do have opinions.

However, this isn’t the nickname I generally use online - just one I chose for this particular Lemmy account. I post and comment quite a bit, and people tend to start recognizing me after a while, so I keep creating new accounts to maintain anonymity.

  • Look, I asked for a couple of clear, concrete examples - not because I’m unwilling to do my own research, but because I want to hear what you consider the strongest case for it. Sending someone off to ‘read the news’ or linking an enormous wiki article is more about shutting down the conversation than having a good-faith discussion. If our positions were reversed, and you sincerely wanted to understand my point, would you appreciate me saying ‘go watch this two-hour documentary’ without providing any specifics? If you genuinely believe Trump is helping Russia, why not briefly share one or two of the most compelling examples that convinced you personally? That’s usually what people do when they’re sincerely interested in sharing knowledge rather than simply dismissing questions.
