I’m American, so i assumed the space between the green and white line was the bike lane for a bit.
I love this idea.
What if cities implemented special routes that are cycle only routes.
They could make small roads that lead to popular parts of the city easily and safely bikeable.
God! I wish my roads were not so dangerous.
Netherlands does it all the time. Bikes are the main transport there.
This is the case in Finland as well
It takes so little effort to just create 2-3 routes going along each cardinal direction of a city if you compare it to normal road infrastructure, but it massively improves the cycling experience.

As much as I like the idea, the naming is completely wrong and the concept should be corrected
In UK the “cycle super-highways” are successful, but only for a part of the population (young white males).
The term “highways” is a legacy from automobile and comes with ideas of speed and danger.
We should go in a different direction and try to be inclusive. We want families riding their bikes with kids. We want women and we want people of all origins too.
Hahaha this is the kind of idea that halts all development so some stupid comittee can discuss names for years. Who cares what the name is? Highway is an okay name
@JeffreyOrange the non-inclusivitybof the cycle super-highways in London is a **real** problem.
If you want the most people to get on their bikes, people who are scared because of danger of car roads, then you want them to feel safe. And they won’t on those cycle super highways.
Is it really? I don’t recall the cycleways being dominated by young white men.
Not that I always feel safe on ‘cycle superhighways’ which in many places are just a glorified bike lane tacked on as a complete afterthought, weaving on and off pavements and around bus stops, lacking proper signs to know where it continues after an intersection or just randomly finishing and leaving you stuck in the midst of cars.
So, “express network” instead of “highway”. But other than marketing/communication, I didn’t see much concrete suggestions of how to make them more inclusive.
@joostjakob AFAIK the discussion is open. The naming is one thing, and communication and promotion should follow along.
If you look at a video of a cycle super-highways in London and on of a “continous cycle road” (I don’t know the precise name)in the Netherlands you will see a stark difference.
I wouldn’t bring my kid on the the former, but I would on the latter.
The idea that only young white males will know not to be afraid of the term “cycle super-highway” is insulting to the very people you want to be inclusive to.

The name is the tip of the issue.
The problem is that the categories that are used to biking don’t have any issue. Those who don’t bike (not used to, scared by perceived dangers, whatever) will not begin biking because of cycle superhighways.
This problem has been recognized by TFL and the name “cycle superhighways” has been dropped.
Was TFL insulting anyone by doing so?
What a stupid take. A name is just a name, any connotations are made up by experience. If your cycling highway isn’t safe for drivers that’s an issue, but not caused by the name. What the fuck. Highway is also not exclusive towards women and people of color. I repeat, what the fuck.
