Hello this is my first post on Lemmy, I have been disgruntled with Xiaomi’s stock gallery app and wish to switch to an alternative that will not steal my data.
I use Simple Gallery from F-droid
I downloaded it, looks nice so far.

Ah, that’s pretty shitty if true, do you have any examples?
I’ve been using more of their apps recently, so I’d like to avoid being in that situation in the future :/I’m … quite sure there were many posts about the issue on reddit, with one app in particular becoming paid and people actually losing access to some data, but either these posts have been deleted, or I’m tripping balls because I can’t locate them now.
I’m going to err on the side of not potentially slandering a dev further and delete my comment. I hope no damage was done.
I’ll look out for this, thanks
Ouch, will need to look out for this…
I’m still using an older version of the app due to an update which added a button to enable the fingerprint scanner, when opening a “hidden” gallery. Older version didn’t require a button press and immediately started the fingerprint scanner 😔… no idea if this has been reverted or not
Yep, this is the best available right now.

I have not tried this but it looks nice.
thank you! I will consider it.
Can confirm, I replaced bunch of useless cloud crap on my mum’s phone with simple tools and she likes it. I use them too.
Welcome to Lemmy and Beehaw! I just cross posted this over to !askandroid@lemdro.id as well in case there are more suggestions!
Pardon me if I may inquire, but how exactly does Xiaomi’s gallery fail, at being a gallery application? Morbid curiosity if you will.
it has a crappy video player and is bulky
Yeah, the video player is shit, crashes all the time. I just use VLC for the videos and the gallery app for the images.
Displaying images, truly a technological breakthrough for the modern era!
Not the gallery app, but my MIUI file manager has fucking ads
I really like Aves Libre.
Me too, been using it for a few weeks now and it works great for me. That being said, I don’t have that many photos/videos, so I don’t know how it handles large content collections.
There’s also this one if you like it lightweight.
