I put about 150 hours into NixOS before I was really “done” setting everything up. (Of course, it was completely usable way before that.)

The biggest advantage to me is that that was the last time I will have set anything up. If my laptop or PC or both get thrown into an incinerator tomorrow, I will go buy replacement hardware and will have my exact same setup done in less than 10 minutes.

I used to have serious anxiety about losing my setup with Arch - over the years a lot of config amasses, and sure you can back up your dotfiles, but you better do that after every change, and don’t forget to manually track your changes to /etc, /usr, and so on.

Right now, I am enjoying the most seamless development setup I’ve ever had. That being said, you will have a BAD time unless you embrace nix shells for development (at which point the pip/venv stuff becomes easy, too)

You are right, it’s a steep learning curve and you will have to invest some time initially, but it frees you up in the long run

I did have a weird issue with my printer under nix, turns out it was a bug. I guess 1h time investment is about right.

But that also meant that my Laptop and my GF’s PC were a 0 seconds time investment.

Yes, it’s a couple of years old at this point, but it’s still the best device of its kind.

Not to mention the remote is FANTASTIC.

We only have two "smart* things: when we get up to pee at night, a motion sensor turns on a light in the living room. Much dimmer than those premade motion activated lights, so we don’t wake each other. Returning to bed and triggering the sensor again turns it off.

And when it has been raining more than a certain threshold in the past 24h, the outlet into which the pump that feeds our drip irrigation is plugged turns off, and on again when it hasn’t been raining for a while. Saves lots of water, especially when we are on vacation. (The rest of that system is " dumb", though.)

It’s about a dofferent piece of software, but still highly relevant.

My very first job, right out of school and before Uni, turned out to be almost only be “make calls” (not a call-center or anything, it was administrative tasks that required calling partnered businesses).

I only had that job for 6months or so, but I’m glad I had it. I still prefer Mail, but very often making a quick call is the way to go, and not being afraid of them makes your life way easier.

Inhave the original A5 from Supernote, and while the device still works just fine after 5 years (also I think I never had to change a nib even once), I’ve grown disillusioned with the company.

It came down to the A5 or the rM2 for me hack then. I liked everything about the A5 better, EXCEPT that the rM2 allowed you to mod it and access it via SSH.

The A5 runs on a slim version of Linux. So I asked Supernote if they’d consider opening SSH for users. And they said “Yes! It’s actually in our roadmap for the next release!”

And that’s been the answer I’ve been getting for the past 5 years. The last update for the device was about 3 years ago.

I love that the tablet is running plain Linux, but it suuuuuucks that I can’t use it to its full potential because the sync options suck.

Security by default is fine, but not if its being forced.

If I go out of my way to root my phone or sideload an app, I have a reason for that. I’m fine with an app going “Hey! This phone is rooted / this app is not from an official source! Wait 10s before you can click ‘I understand and take full responsibikity in case of a security breach’”.

I’m not OK with an app going “I will not work on this device because yiur environment is non-standard, period”.

Before. This will create the necessary climate for someone to decide ‘fuck it’ and contact them.

Thanks lol. The thing is, they’re getting away with this. Forcing Freestyle to open their protocol would instantly solve all of those problems, as you could use good hardware with good software, since you’d no longer be locked in.
