  • I just had flashbacks to Dead State. It was a AA title written by one of the guys from Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines so I was watching it closely during development.

Suddenly, it went from EA to full release. I was surprised, but picked it up without reading many reviews.

I enjoyed the game and put maybe 15 hours into it, but then I had to move and had to pack up my PC for a few weeks. By the time I got settled and booted it up, it had gotten a massive patch which fixed a ton of bugs, filled in missing content like item descriptions and a bunch of other polish that would typically be done during pre-launch.

Meanwhile, one of the devs had gotten into a high profile pissing match with the community over accusations they had rushed it out the door. I normally try to sympathize with devs over a reactive community, but I couldn’t help feel like I got punished for buying the game at launch and experiencing those relatively non-replayable opening hours in a non-optimal (Dead) state.

  • I wouldn’t downplay the achievements of the Mattachine Society of DC. They engaged with the government over and over in court and challenged the belief that gay men were open to blackmail and therefore unsafe to employ in government. Kameny created the Gay is Good slogan and argued that government workers who were open about their sexuality had no risk of blackmail, and were only at risk of unfair prejudice from the government itself.

Kameny was far from perfect, but there’s a reason he was standing over Obama’s shoulder when Don’t Ask Don’t Tell was repealed.

  • I just finished reading The Deviant’s War by Eric Cervini and I would highly recommend it for anyone wanting to learn more about the political aspects of the LGBT civil rights movement in the 60s and 70s.

It focuses on Frank Kameny and the Mattachine Society of Washington DC. Kameny was a government astronomer who was fired and lost his security clearance for being gay. He believed that America needed to see that gay people were proper, respectful Americans who looked and behaved just like everyone else outside of the bedroom. He organized the first pickets and insisted that everyone wore business formal clothes, picketed quietly, with pre-approved signs, and displayed no signs of affection to their partners during the picket if they were present.

I know some bank tellers who say they are taught to comply with ANY robbery instructions. Even if it’s as simple as someone slipping them a note saying, “This is a robbery” with no explicit threats. If they feel comfortable, they can slip him the marked bills or dye packs, but they won’t be punished if they don’t. Get the robber out, lock the door, call the cops.

I could totally see the tellers recognizing the avocado for what it was and figuring it was on the cops to catch him, not theirs.

  • Third party then? I voted third party in 2016. Figured as little as I liked Hilary, she had it in the bag, so might as well do a little protesting, eh? Fuck, was I an idiot.

Look at the polls man. The time to protest was in the primaries. November fucking counts. Don’t claim you will be sitting there in good conscience as Trump throws out all the court cases against him, maybe stacks the Supreme Court for another decade or two of Conservative control, and pours more fuel on the stupid fucking culture wars that the GOP keeps burning to keep us distracted while the 1% are squeezing us for more and more.

You will have had the chance to make a difference, however small, and you will have fucking wasted it. For your “conscience”.

  • (First off, the last gen versions were a shit show and I fully believe CDPR should have bit the bullet and cancelled those preorders. That was a failure at the high levels, not with the devs. This is about the PC version:)

Hey yo, I’m one of those idiots that gave it a good review, and that was day one. Yeah, it had a bad launch, but I’d argue it was no worse than No Man’s Sky, or Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines, or The Witcher 3. All of the above are some of my favorite games of all time.

If you don’t like the core game, cool. Agree to disagree. But the things that people love about the game now have been in there since 1.0. Sure, there are genuine criticisms to be made, but most of the hate this game got has either been patched out or was pure bandwagon hate to begin with.

  • As a gamer who has owned every Xbox from the OG to a Xbox One S, I just don’t understand Microsoft’s strategy for this generation. Vanishingly few console exclusives, and most of those shipped on PC, too. As someone with a decent PC and enough income to buy 2-3 consoles per gen, they just haven’t given me a reason to buy an Xbox Series console.

I know they hoped to sell Game Pass to PC only players, but without the lock-in of a console, there’s just no incentive to buy it over a PS Plus subscription and individually buying the exclusives I want on PC.

Now they’re burning bridges with players by closing down beloved developers, even if their last title was successful. I wonder what Ninja Theory devs are thinking with Hellblade 2 a couple weeks out.
