Why would I ever want to leave the island?!?
j/k. My daughter and I are going to Vancouver this week. If I had to go back and forth regularly I would probably be very frustrated but it is a rarity for us.

Sounds wonderful, and living in Comox Valley all easily accessible. Heck I can pick wild berries and cook bannock in my back yard.
I will never be a native in either sense of the word, but I do love this place. Its beauty blows my mind nearly every day.

Something like a Vacancy Tax would be helpful in insuring that more housing is available, it would do little to create more home ownership because the land itself is expensive even if nothing is on it.
I see this as smart use of land. Instead of another Big Box store and sprawling parking lot the city gets the store and 800 more apartments in the same footprint.
Seems like you will get a biased sample here…
Happy Canada Day. Though I claimed my citizenship 9yrs ago, this is my first living here.
Poutine, butter tarts and caesars for all!
What exactly do you like about X11?
That it works just fine for my purposes. When it does not I will switch to Wayland but I have no reason to at the moment.
Indeed. Retraining and the extra time using a new tool is a short term loss for what should be a long term gain. The transition will always suck.

87€ does not include case, power supply, or microSD. Realistically close to 120€ to get a working system and for that kind of money yes you can get a newish Celeron powered PC with 8GB RAM and 128GB SSD/NVME.
I am doing conversion from Canadian Dollar so my calculations and what is actually available in Europe might be off a bit. It is totally possible here though.
Slackware(1995?), Yggdrasil, Redhat/Fedora/Mandrake, SuSE, Debian/Ubuntu/Mint
Probably some others I have forgotten, and there was a lot of back and forth at various times but I settled on Debian based because at the time APT was the best package manager. I mostly use Mint or straight Debian now because familiarity makes it the simplest for me after all these years.
not Linux but also Solaris, SunOS, & AIX
I am sure you can, but you will likely get better performance from a mini PC for roughly the same price.
Seriously. I think I installed my first Linux Firmware almost 20yrs ago on a WRT54G.

So this is not running Windows apps on linux, but displaying them on your linux desktop. You still need to run Windows in a VM.
The Future is a Dead Mall
Before I quit Reddit (when Bacon Reader died) I had already curtailed my commenting because of this. It seemed that any time I tried to make a thoughtful comment on a even slightly contentions subject I ended up in a pointless argument with someone who had poor reading comprehension. It was disheartening to realize that while I was agonizing over every word I put into my comment in an attempt to clearly explain my thought, the same courtesy would not be extended by the people mis-reading it. I started to think people were just scanning comments for keywords to get angry about then telling me that I was ignorant of a subject I knew a great deal about or a reactionary child when I am 50 IRL. Commenting became a burden and it lead to a decline in the quality of conversation as more and more thoughtful commenters found that burden too great.
