  • I work in the mining industry and we had a huge issue with silicosis. The dust that destroys your lungs is about smaller than 7 microns. That size any and all things like mucous and other bodily mechanisms to catch the dust fails, and the silicon crystal with its sharp edges enters and cuts the alveoli and scar tissue forms making any gas exchange almost impossible. And you can usually only see up to 25 microns, so basically the air looks clean, you don’t feel the dust entering your lungs there is no way to tell except getting winded easier, thinking maybe you have become less fit and it progresses slowly until you realise something is amiss, then it is to late, irreversible damage that can be fatal

  • Jeez Biden now has a choice in my opinion, fighting a two-way battle against a united Republican party and the other half of the dissenting Democrats or swallow his pride and pass on the baton to someone that could be more convincing to voters than Trump. Biden was the right choice against Trump in 2020, because he won by convincing voters he was way more capable than Trump. Now in 2024 is he still as convincing.

Usually a smart person changes course if they see their current trajectory will lead to failure, a proud person will continue their trajectory even if it will lead to failure, and try and try again until they succeed. The proud person might succeed some of the time, the smart person will succeed most of the time

  • Populism is a feature of democracy. It’s just like in life, easy answers, like fast food for example, are always easy to suggest, but in the long term might not be the best. But if you can show your voter base, eating these disgusting vegetables in the long term is going to do everyone good, slight inconvenience, major benefit. So there will always be the power hungry populist that will give easy and popular answers to hard questions, it is the voters duty to determine who has their long term interests at heart and who is able to bribe you with your shortsighted desires to get into power.

  • Agree where is coal, but it is hard to track since most of these have a set value and quantity at that time and is usually sold and usually tracked at which amounts, where coal is a different beast, you have different types of coal, like peat, lignite, bituminous and anthracite, then there is even in the same type different grades and quantity, like bituminous coal you will look at the water content, the ash content, amount of macerials… All of these affect their price. Then some coal is mined and consumed at source, usually powerplants are build right by coalfields, to minimise transportation costs, and the mine might be owned by the powerplant, or with a private contract where the price and quantity would not be disclosed to the public.

But if you look at USA, China, India and Indonesia, I think, so my very biased outlook, their combined coal mining, not only in $ but also in Tonnes, will make oil look like a small footnote.

  • I would but it would make his character too overpowered, he would be bran with the all seeing eye and have superhuman strength speed like children of Dune and his burrowing, healing abilities in God emperor. He does have a great weakness with water, but even that would be trivial to him

Yeah it is a hard question, like can be argued that there are too many people for the society and they need to be purged. Yeah I do not have a good answer but I think my point is rather that freedom isn’t freedom, just agreed confines in society that is ever evolving, that in my opinion should be based in reason, and it is society’s duty to use the correct reasoning.

Like you mention allowing human sacrifices in the name of reproduction. The question is a bit loaded but reasoning can be used, what is human sacrifices? We do allow the death of certain individuals in certain societies, soldiers in war, criminals in execution, children that do not have access to resources like, shelter, food or medication. Can smoking and drinking be seen as a violation of life, since it slowly takes it away, what about unhealthy food or even drugs, does any vices like gambling or sex seen could be threatening to the quality of life. You see how life actually is valuable to a certain degree in society but then there is also a freedom to throw it away. There are reproductive rights, should everyone have a right to have children? What if this person is 7 years old? What if this person already had all their children taken away due to incest and molestation on multiple occasions. Can you abort whenever like at 8 months or 1 week or is it when two gametes form an embryo. What if it is a non-viable embryo, what if this embryo implanted itself in a place outside of a womb and abortion in this instance will save the mothers reproductive organs to have future successful pregnancies.

There are very few things that are black and white in this life, very very few, so I believe there should be an ongoing discussion and that laws should follow reason and compassion for the vulnerable, that laws must constantly change, especially the laws, decrees, holy texts that invested people say should never change no matter the reason

You aren’t free to do anything unless we live in the wild. Society is built on the premise that we work together and place restrictions on certain things where we can live in harmony. But it is an ever evolving set of rules, and just because the law says so does not make it just, slavery was a law, apartheid was a law, the purge in a fictional America is a law. So I believe we must constantly evolve our laws with reason, to allow as much freedom in society even at an individual level, where society can grow and lead to the most benefit for the majority of people

  • That’s cute if you think that analogy is sufficient to make you feel better. Make no mistake I hope western weapons will turn the tide but war is messy and even if you have the most advance quality weapons, quantity unfortunately still does damage even how basic, if I have 1 million soldiers with swords and bows descend on a thousand highly advanced soldiers the battle will be intense. If the west continues to drip feed support, low level basic weaponry in abundance will counter the support. The toilet training level technology has put astronauts on the moon.
