Yes, and I’m inclined to think there is a not-tiny subset of people who really would be tireless creatives/athletes etc under conditions of full communism, that our general level of engagement with learning, art, and science would probably increase, and there would be plenty of room for a far easier way of life as well.

It seems like degrowthers have some valuable insight but yeah if you simultaneously did not believe in the neccesity and potential of revolution and state overthrow it would be very “doomer”.

Yes, growth in some positive sectors, but if you would agree that advertising, fossil fuels, fast fashion, car dependence, planned obsolescence, etc. all need to be severely downsized or gotten rid of, it seems like you’d agree more than disagree with the changes degrowthers want to make; that is to say nothing of their ideas of transition, which may very well be utopian. I have yet to get to that chapter in my book to make a proper investigation.

Here is some stuff from my notes on the book to give a rough idea. Disclaimer, I don’t have a horse in this race, so any grievances with these ideas are not with me, although I am trying to give the degrowth ideas a fair shake. You will see that some of them are basically socialist demands:

growth does not differentiate between the useful and destructive, essential and superfluous. (p. 24)

it is because our economies growth dependent that stagnation is seen as problematic. p. 27

[degrowth also strives for ] decoupling wellbeing from imperative to grow. p. 27

• Effects of growth: destroys ecological foundations of life; impedes equality and well-being; imposes alienated ways of living; depends on exploitation, competition, accumulation; relies on gendered super-exploitation; oppressive ways of production; relies on neocolonial relations.

• 6 changes (p. 33):

  • democratize economy, redistribution and social goods;
  • democratizing technology, a repair station in every neighbourhood;
  • revaluation of labour, reducing work time and eliminating useless jobs;
  • democratization of social metabolism;
  • international solidarity and reparations in the form of money, technology, and help.

Working on my 2d Unity game, working on coding problems on Exercism, I am so close to being done the C++ problem set on that site, like 87%. Having a horrible time trying to pick what to write my paper on in Environmental Sociology, there just seems like so much to write about, even if I focus on my region.

Playing Thief Gold and loving it, I’m going to check out the open source clone as soon as I’m done. Installed and booted up New Vegas to show my gf the amazing game I’ve been talking about and OMG, it was a liiiitle jankier than I remember, I really should have installed the mods first if I wanted the game to look polished.

I checked into the library to ask about a casual job I applied for… It’s been screening for like 2 months.

I personally switched because zsh supports a time tracking software, so I can know how long I’ve been coding… and then never used it for that.

Tilix and zsh has been nice, since I wanted to make my shell window a bit transparent, like 85% alpha, just like how it looks.

It is an understandable but misguided sentiment. There is plenty of work for the communist orgs to do, I think, and some of the more progressive community orgs may even be friendly or ambivalent to the communists. Maybe instead we should be relieved that our relatives and neighbours are finding ways to try to improve their situation, even though they lack a radical perspective and critique of capitalist society. We know charity has limits and deficiencies. Does anywhere have a food bank that has good enough food in good enough quantities, with no hoops to jump through?

Also on a silly note, Does the district name Borgerhaut have anything to do/ contain cognates with “burgher” and “haute”? a name something like the High Burgher [District]? Burgher Heights? :P
