@corbin @sneerclub AIUI scammers are more easily scammed than average folks precisely because they think they know all about scams and nobody can fool them. It leads to complacency.
Scottish resident SF/F author (he/him/they/them). Latest book, SEASON OF SKULLS (Publishers: UK: Orbit, USA: Tor.com). Next book: A CONVENTIONAL BOY (2024). Does not play well with Nazis. Abolish the monarchy!

@saucerwizard Rationalism overlaps with TESCREAL and stuff like Extropianism and Cosmism which was invented by a straight-up Russian Orthodox theologian and philosopher, Nikolai Federov, in the late 19th century, to provide a teleological imperative for space colonization. It borrowed its structural skeleton from Christianity.
The rapture *of* the Nerds, and I got the phrase from Ken MacLeod, who says he got it from someone else (but forgot who it was).
The design patterns of Christian fundamentalism show up strongly in singularitarianism (minus the God’n’Jeezus show). Not surprising given its ancestry lies in Russian Cosmism.
So advocating for “the uploaded” is like advocating for the souls of the elect in heaven, after the ain’t-happened-yet Rapture.
@maol 25 years ago I saw one for sale in the Scottish borders for £250K. An absolute steal—if you could afford the £25K/year for heating and the extra £100K+ to repair the leaky roof. Never mind the £50K to install double glazing and insulation and the £200K or so in renovation it urgently needed. Etc.
@Amoeba_Girl The far right are all about beating up on the Other, and those with acute mental illness are in continuous supply. (Latest twist: if you’re a grifter and antipsychotic meds have crimped your supply of Others to demonize, you can gaslight your followers on social media and convince them that everybody *else* is crazy. See also Q, Trump …)
@swlabr He doesn’t have mirrorshade-wearing bodyguard goons wearing collar bombs to keep them in line after civilization collapses. Or a long pork sushi chef. Yet.
@MikeStok @lobotomy42 It’s a reference to a scene in “The Matrix”.
@corbin You missed the best bit: one of the current INTERCAL compilers, CLC-INTERCAL (for a superset of the language which adds a bunch more insanity) is implemented IN INTERCAL! It’s self-compiling. Also object-oriented, has quantum-indeterminate operators, and a computed COME FROM statement (also with quantum indeterminacy).
I think we should organize a fundraiser to pay CLC-INTERCAL’s developer @Uilebheist to visit Yud and melt his brain.
@gerikson This is to say nothing of the whole English public school/boarding school genre, much of it written by the hyper-prolific Charles Hamilton (1876-1961) from 1907-1940.
Rowling is just a straightforward Hamilton rip-off, with added magic.

@Soyweiser Has he been huffing Marinetti’s exhaust fumes again?
@self @techtakes To neoreactionaries, accelerationism offers an attractive stalking-horse for their forward-to-the-past politics. Feudalism shall rise once more in spaaaaace! And the beta cucks will be put in their place alongside the wimmins and other chattels, or something, I guess. (Ack, spit.)
@kuna @sneerclub Capitalism IS the AI. (Or rather, the society collectively created by the AIs we call “corporations”.)
@self Oh, that’s like the time I met Young Moldbug at his student house and his first words were, “let me show you the lizard room!”
He was so proud of his room full of giant lizards (and the odd snake).
So proud.
@YouKnowWhoTheFuckIAM @sneerclub Au contraire: my brother-in-law is a retired philosophy professor, so Voice of Experiece here says: all philosophers are 99% FULL of shit, no exceptions.
(They try to use tools we have no actual understanding of—language and mind—to understand external reality. So they often get bogged down in self-serving rationalizations that appeal to their cognitive biases. There, I’m doing it too!)
@dgerard @techtakes … ;“A Libertarian is just a Child Sex Offender whose phone hasn’t been seized and searched for CSAM yet.”
@self No, transhumanism goes back before Italian proto-fascists like Marinetti–it arrived in the west via translations of Konstantin Tsiolkovsky but he learned it from his teacher, the Russian Orthodox theologian and inventor of Cosmism, Nikolai Fyodorovitch Fyodorov.
It’s 19th century Russian Orthodox theological heresy. Transhumanism is just Christianity in god-free, jesus-free, drag.
@gerikson This is a thing divers have known for decades—nitrogen narcosis is a known problem, it’s why they use different breathing gas mixes at depth. NASA verified it too as their early (Mercury/Gemini/Apollo) spacecraft used pure O2 at 0.3 bar pressure (with no nitrogen) to save hull mass. As do current spacesuits (low pressure makes it easier to move/flex in them). It’s not a huge cognitive load at ambient pressure/mix, though—we evolved in it!
@kuna I can’t really take Curtis seriously, but he did make ONE good point (in private email): the entire spectrum of political discourse today, from anarchists through communists to nazis, is built atop the wreckage of the Ancien Regime, which no longer exists: we’re all children of the century of revolutions (the 17th-18th). Ofc. that’s before he goes off the rails and tries to drag us all kicking and screaming back to the Divine Right of Kings …
@self Why don’t they just double-down on evil and market it as the OS for supervillains? There’s a perfectly good bacronym for it already—SPECTRE, the Software Executive for Cryptocurrency, Intrusion, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion. (Maintainer: Ernst Stavro Blofeld. And he doesn’t use git, he uses sccs—collaborators get the shark tank.)
@dgerard Whiteness is a movable feast. (Ask anyone who’s Jewish, or LGBT+, or Italian/Irish in the USA in the 19th century or Hispanic in the USA before/after the 1970s).
