I scan nearly all the crap that comes in through my (physical) mailbox and throw it away. My trusty Brother multi laser thingy sends it to me per e-mail and I can sort it later, when the PC is on. Once a month or so, I need to print some pages and it does that, too. Awesome thing, wouldn’t want to miss it.
Exactly this. For me it becomes obvious, when I play older games. Sure, A Link to the Past is still a gem, Super Metroid or SMB3, too. But many of those older games, we have fond memories of, kind of suck today. Just a bit, they are still fun. But the magic is gone. Saw that with Sands of Time a few weeks ago. Then the System Shock Remake came and gave that sense of wonder back.
Downloads are no problem. Disk space is cheaper then ever. Go have fun discussing games on Lemmy while waiting for the download, watch a Video about it or whatever. It is just harder to have fun, because we have sooo much to choose from and because some of us became old grumpy farts (myself included).
As a german I can’t remember, when I used a fax the last time. I think, I have sent two or three faxes in my whole life and that was long ago. But while I am pretty sure, some administrations still use that shit, I cannot imagine, anyone in Germany used a floppy after the 90th. Maybe some retro freaks or an ancient tecnological device that resist to die. But that would really be an exemption.
Fucking excel sheets, though …
I don’t think that your differentiazion between patriotism and nationalism is correct. Nationalism always began with the invention of nations through national movements. The nation building in europe began in the 18th century, not a thousand years ago. Nationalism always refers to the invented history of a nation (“a thousand years ago”), while patriotism can refer to the political system or the constitutional documents.
I think both are awful because there is a really fine line to chauvinism. The positive view of oneselfes too often comes with the devaluation of others.
Yesss! My first five minutes with OpenSuse.
I mean, you can change that behaviour somehow. But there are so many other small things like the constant vendor changes. Zypper is just so quirky. It’s a cool distro and to have a rolling release option like tumbleweed is always a big plus in my opinion, but I just wouldn’t recommend it to people who are not really eager to play around with their distro.
Ah, OpenSuse. The distro with the package management that spams your drive full of unnecessary optional dependencies.
Would always recommend EndeavourOS.
There are none.
That doesn’t work. Either there is physical proof or there is none. Afaik the latter is correct.
Interesting. I was a triggered vegetarian and didn’t like those guys calling me a cheese breather (I’m still ambivalent towards them). When I became a vegan it was because of the non-drastic stating a fact people, not because of the jerks.
So maybe we need both – and many more forms of activism?
Look at it like that: Many people become vegan because they realize that there is no magical difference between humans (or dogs, cats and so on) and the animals who are raised to be slaughtered. We all feel pain, fear and grief. So a society that kills sentient animals and eats or wears parts of their dead bodies is not too different then one which does that with their fellow humans. How angry would you be to live in such a horrible society?
The only reason to not being angry all the time is, that I needed more than 30 years to realize those things myself. How we are handling most animals, how we are torturing and killing them is normalized. It is really hard to get from “steak yummy” to a vegan world view. How can I expect that other people change their ways just like that?
It is still fucking sad and I totally get, why some vegans are so angry. Live and let live is the most cynical shit one could say in this situation.
OP mentions this delivering 3kWh on a typical day, about 10% of a typical US household’s consumption.
Wow, this is much. If you are correct, a typical US household consumes two times the energy than a typical german household.
The last numbers I found where from 2021 with 5411 kWh for a household with 3 or more people.
Yeah, it runs on Linux. After the last update, my PC transformed a bit into a heat pump, though.
True, it’s amazing. But don’t look it up.
For me, as a vegan Linux user, who really doesn’t like the concept of the Jedi sect, this sounds like a compliment.
The problem is: most times it works the other way. You are at a barbeque and bring your own stuff. There are always people who feel obliged to talk shit about you – or worse, cannot shut up about their own meat consumption, how they only buy the „good“ meat and only seldom, but how hard it would be without cheese and so on.
Yeah, there are some preaching vegans, but those few are not the reason why some people are hating on us.
You are making extraordinary claims here. All people challenging the status quo are hated on and attacked by a big part of the population. Be it vegans, queer people, feminists. How do we dare to question their identity, place in the world or behaviour by having an opini9n or by just fucking existing?
