I got an ad once for a group selling stolen credit card numbers too. I must have reported it at least a dozen times but it was always kept up and the report said it didn’t break any rules. It only got removed after I just skipped Facebook reports and reported to the police.

And even for vintage cars and stuff, I assume we’ll see better eco friendly and bio fuels being created that could be made in smaller batches without needing to use conventional oil as the fuel. Starting to see more and more of this on aviation already, and even some old warbirds have done recent tests on these fuels and run really well.

Yeah, a step backward for useful science that can help healthcare facilities predict what’s to come, and scientists study what is out there. Even as a member of the public I really liked being able to see the data just to have an idea of what’s going on out there and take the necessary precautions to try my best at avoiding illness for me and my family. This seemed like something really cool that came out of the pandemic for illness tracking in general, but I’m not surprised the government of anti-science and anti-healthcare would silence this.

The other reply answered your performance question already, but to address your concern about switching between OS’s for different program needs - you could always run windows in a virtual machine on Linux and just use Windows and the needed Windows software that way without having to fully reboot into Windows. This is the direction I plan on eventually going someday with my own setup and using Tiny11 for a lightweight windows VM.

Dead easy with Mint. I’ve been running it full time on my laptop for months now and my wife only recently came to find out it wasn’t windows when I was explaining Linux to her (and she’s not a technical personal - she’s the person who yells at TV remotes when they don’t work). Installation is super easy, much like installing windows - answer a few questions and off it goes. You can even install it alongside windows and pick what one you want to run on boot (I did this because of a couple windows-only apps I can’t ditch just yet). If you can figure out Lemmy, Mint will be a breeze too.

I feel like these days the tech should be there to just leverage our cell phones for this. Most drivers have their phones paired to their cars now anyway, and perhaps some sort of emergency protocol could be created where a car could even connect through a nearby non-paired phone for an automated emergency call too. As for tracking - make cars have something like an air tag type function built in that can share both android+apple tracking networks. This is all a pipe dream anyway - there’s money to be made on connected car services so the shareholders won’t be for modernizing the approach anytime soon.

Got a relative who’s worked at a local Loblaws warehouse/distribution center for decades - he said within days of the boycott starting, their orders from stores dropped dramatically and they were sending people home and scaling back shifts. Comparatively speaking they used to be so busy that basically anyone could opt for overtime whenever they wanted it. It was great to hear that from the inside and validate what murmur was in the media about it back then.

Unless you live there, your visit to BC likely did not involve needing to use any of those systems or services. You saw the country through tourist eyes.

Add Canada to that list. 1 million immigrants a year and everything is collapsing - our housing, healthcare, education, nothing can keep up.

Sadly, some of the chaos is already spilling over. The guy slated to probably be our next PM is basically Trump Jr. and has done all he can to appeal to the far right here, who have gotten exponentially more vocal and empowered in recent years. My province is also working slowly toward privitized healthcare too. Canada is more and more just America Jr. these days.

And unless it’s name brand, most things that plug into the wall from amazon lack proper safety certifications too (power bars, extension cables, etc). Many will print the logos on them, but when you look them up they have zero certifications and aren’t recognized by those authorities at all.

Sadly, that’s also the exact description of who Canada is most likely to elect as their next leader too. “bitcoin millhouse” we call him.

There’s a dairy in my city that’s really taking off in recent years with the same glass approach too. A lot of restaurants, cafes, etc all using their stuff now and if their social media following is any indication then a fair bit of regular consumers too. I like to remain optimistic that stuff like this continues to inspire more sustainable, local food and beverage companies.

We just shut off our Toyota fobs every time we park, it’s a few extra button presses on the fob but gives some piece of mind. Why they can’t just put a simple power toggle on the fob that everyone could easily use when done is beyond me. Most people, Toyota employees included, didn’t even know the fobs could be powered down with a button combo.

The damage done will last decades beyond the 4 years.
