@AllNewTypeFace @jonne Why wouldn’t freight go electric? I know some of the coal trains lines in Australia are electric, which I understand is a bit of a different beast to freight, but it is similar in most ways.

@Nath @Baku No, it goes to show that there is a lot of work to be done. Decades of neglect and removing services can’t be fixed quickly
Making a single station double platform to increase service frequency should be a easy win, but there isn’t much point doing it before the frequency can be improved at peak times. So doing it before Metro1 opens is a waste
But doing it shortly after should be a priority
That the level crossing removal works haven’t been leaving space for extra tracks is silly
@Baku sorry, I came off as dismissive of your experience didn’t I. That was rude of me.
Any change of this nature will have winners and losers. Hopefully the losers aren’t getting too bad a deal and there are a lot more big winners.
@Baku yes, it will be a few minutes slower for some but faster for others. Increased capacity and frequency will assist most
@maegul @Railison To the extent that it is a bottle neck for given lines it needs to be removed, but having every service that goes around the loop end up going out to the end of some line is an efficiency gain: those passengers don’t have to change trains at Southern Cross or Flinders.
But yes, as it is a bottle neck for getting more trains out to the ends of each line it will get removed from more and more lines.
Remember we the Werribee/Williamstown & Frankston lines are out already
@maegul Massive. Particularly for people with mobility issues (even the good trams aren’t as accessible as a train) accessing the hospital.
Including those with kids in prams!

If the Suburban Rail Loop was being completed now, not started things would be much better.
@Jumuta @maegul Yeah, the lines getting the immediate and substantial capacity upgrade are going to have pretty favourable views of it.
Passenger numbers at Parkville might be pretty impressive pretty quickly.
And the tram users who go past the Women’s will also be pretty happy with the change in tram usage from Parkville station users too.
@maegul @Melonpoly Yeah, everyone loves the new road, because it is empty and awesome to use (for a few weeks) where the same phenomenon on a train line is a failure.

@Kecessa @plactagonic dirt paths in australia have good numbers of snakes, I tink observations of snakes are just common.

But as with most fitness gear, second hand can be a real bargain. Still spend more than the minimum, but get the 4x bike for 1.5x.

@FartsWithAnAccent @JacobCoffinWrites A generally good point to remember is the manufacturers load limit. Exceeding that is probably okay, but remember you have started to enter “hear be dragons territory”.
Many regular bikes have a 150kg load limit, w1hich isn’t too hard to exceed with a few panniers and a full sized rider (heck, it isn’t that hard to exceed with a backpack and a large rider).
Trailers help get around load limit a bit, but when going that way remember the brakes!
@figstick @Tak you probably need a density of more than 1 person per square km. That is where most people live. It is great for most people. Maybe even nearly everyone.
But for the last 0.1% something else is needed.
But even then it might be better to have personal rail vehicles on private tracks (the same tracks the farm should be using for it’s produce.
@Tak Or build stations and tracks where so few people will use them.
Building more tracks for everything would be good, but still not an answer for everything.
A world where we only had trains and push bikes would be nice, but not likely to happen.
