I’d argue that Valve does more than just take 30% as a middle man. Between Steam Input, Proton, the beta built in recording system, the Forums for every game, community system and the marketplace, having your game on Steam is a massive value generator for the consumer and by extension developers.

30% might not be what the industry standard should be, but Valve isn’t just providing a standard digital distribution service.

Being open source doesn’t stop the inherent flaws of the Karma system or the increasing toxicity that correlates with platform population.

It’s really cool that Lemmy is FOSS, don’t get me wrong, but that’s kinda irrelevant to the issues presented.

This is really the terminal issue with Reddit alternatives. They are just Reddit minus the most recent controversy as of foundation. Reddit is overall just a popular content aggregation website with poorly design discussion features.

Upvotes and down votes, while intended to help users weed out bad arguments and spam, only achive in promoting sophistry and tribalism. What ends up getting upvoted is what “wins” the argument, while good arguments that come from unpopular viewpoints get downvoted.

And with that comes all the toxic elements from old Reddit ruat we all hope just won’t be a part of our replacements. Reddit’s format works at a smaller scale, where users are typically more enthusiastic and therefor better informed, but as the sites get larger you’ll notice they typical hyper-snarky “owned with facts and logic” attitude take hold of a community as more people with a weaker investment jump on the bandwagon and upvote everything that makes them feel smart.

Eventually, the site becomes just like Reddit, but for a smaller and more insulated community, and users begin to question why they’re here instead of Reddit which has the established user base that can reliably cover more topics you are interested in.

We have not learnt from history, and we are doomed to repeat it. Maybe it’ll be different in the future.

When I worked as a cleaner at a supermarket I got moved to the evening shift which used to have two people who got laid off.

I was on my own and it quickly became apparent that the shift needs two people to actually get everything done. I pointed it out, but the section lead (incompetent nepohire who was literally kicked out of every other section for being a terrible leader) just decided I was being slow.

Even after I broke down the hour per hour workload, they just insisted I had to learn how to work faster. One “tip” they had was to just throw water everywhere and mop it up to save time. Let’s not even get to the “mental health ping-pong table” they have.

Whenever I visit that supermarket today it still looks filthy.

I’ve been using Nobara for gaming a while now, and it’s certainly a good choice from by experience. It’s a modified Fedora distro that’s designed for gaming.

Here in the UK we just pretend it’s not a problem by calling it a lifestyle choice.

Young men today face a mountain of issues with zero sympathy from the people or institutions around them. And grifters prey on these men.

Having grown up in the “teach boys not to rape” era of progrssive rhetoric, it’s actually insane to see all these people just insist being in a guy’s world is all sunshine and rainbows and all these men are just awful people falling of their own accord.

Young men get told some pretty damaging things growing up, even from progressive people.

Everyone has problems, lots of people are coming of age all kinds of fucked up, and we can’t fix this by implying it’s all their own doing.

It does for software becuase when somthing gains enough marketshare it then becomes somthing that businesses start to consider as a general option.

Like the reason Adobe gets by despite the culture for just pirating their software is becuase even piracy gives market share, and Adobe products are so commonly used that corporations feel obliged to use Adobe licences in their projects.

I am also working class and I understand that even in the same class circumstances can be vastly different.

First we’d need to ask what could a cloak or cape provide for the modern man that jackets and coats don’t already do while giving the wearer free movement of their arms?

The cape’s association with wealth and nobility is also hurt by the fact that the upperclasses these days are more interested in appropriating the style of lower class people (I.e. pre-distressed jeans) to try and appear as more down to earth.

I’m saying it doesn’t matter in function.

If you actually care about dismantling toxic masculinity you’d actually take the time to understand men when they do speak out about the things that bother them, instead of trying to turn it around on these men being too ignorant because they don’t have the privilege we do to ruminate on society like we can.

Maybe if feminism could do more in their social circles to shut down feminist misandry before it becomes an issue for men, instead of reinforcing toxic masculinity by insisting men should just shut up and deal with it, then these men who are “trapped in the system” wouldn’t have these problems with feminism to begin with.

But I suppose as long as we can reaffirm our own perception of superiority towards these lower beings then we’ll be fine. Most of the male feminists I see are dudes who are comparatively well off to the average working man, and I don’t think that’s just random chance. It’s easy to be a male feminist when you are in the privileged position to philosophise, but I don’t think it’s fair to just expect men in disadvantaged positions in life to just eat the same blows we can shrug off.

I feel like trying to frame men’s mental health issues as a problem caused exclusively by “the patriarchy and capitalism” seems like it’s trying to wash the rest of society of their own personal responsibility to contribute to making the world a better place for everyone. Patriarchy and Capitalism are just tools of the greater power structure of society, which we all have a hand in forming and perpetuating.

And let’s not pretend that the feminist movement’s tendency to pump out and empower misandrists and misandrist thinking isn’t going to have a negative impact men’s mental health, especially if we continue to hold feminism as a scared cow beyond reproach or criticism. And let’s not pretend the fact that we have the explicitly female coded “feminism” that opposes the explicitly coded “patriarchy” isn’t going to give people who don’t have a lot of time to philosophise an inherently combative view of the feminism.

It’s hard to buy into the whole “actually femismim is for anyone who wants equality” shtick when you’re working exhaustive jobs most your life and then you get exposed to the kind of feminist who says men might as well go extinct because they have sperm banks now.

Why risk experiencing somthing potentially bad when you can get all your opinions second hand?

People really do love to try and tie every world issue into one thing, when the fact of the matter is that things like “the patriarchy” or “capitalism” are just tools of the oppressor and not the oppressor themselves.

It doesn’t matter what ideology you run a society with if the people are the top are all shortsighted, self interested ideologues.

People accosiate monarchs with oppression for a reason.

Like yeah capitalism in it’s current state us the cuase of a lot of problems, but the inevitable communist revolution isn’t going to do much about the crushing expectations society puts on men.

Everytime I think rich kids must feel bad for inequality, I remember how easy it is for them to cure their own guilt with the small platitudes of progressivism that won’t at all effect the system that empowers them to our detriment.
