  • Step 1: clean out the lint from the charging port

Step 2: make sure you actually got all the lint out and there isn’t any hiding to the side.

The sim ejector pin that used to come with phones can sometimes just barely fit between the center blade and connector housing. Otherwise a paperclip with a slight hook bent into the end can work well. Flosspicks work well to dig out the lint.

Also consider getting a wireless charger for nightly charging if your phone supports it.

  • From a product development viewpoint, the gun is an uninteresting part. It’s better to use something that already has a mature production line and has been thoroughly field tested. It’s the vision and control systems they are interested in developing, the gun is just the chosen end effector for this application.

Even when they’re ready to start deploying systems like this, there’s a lot of value in using compenents that the military already has a lot of spare parts for and that personnel know how to maintain. I wouldn’t expect a custom gun until units like this are commonplace.

  • For example, I used to use generic eye drops. Then there were a bunch of recalls on eye drops made in India because they weren’t kept sterile and people were getting eye infections. So now I make sure to only buy eye drops that are manufactured in countries with actual controls on health codes. It turns out that imposing that restriction elliminated all the generic options. I’m certainly not happy to be paying double for brand name pataday, but I don’t care to mess with the chance of eye infections.

  • The bad flooding is because of how steep those areas are. Down in Florida, water takes a while to make its way into the creeks, streams, and rivers. The areas with the most extreme flooding is because entire mountainsides worth of rainfall drains in the span of a couple days.

Eastern TN and western NC also had a ton of rainfall from thunderstorms just before Helene so the ground was already saturated. For reference check out this rain gauge in Asheville.

    https://waterdata.usgs.gov/monitoring-location/353312082355545/#parameterCode=00045&period=P7D&showMedian=false

The rain from Helene didn’t really get to Western NC until the early hours of Friday the 27th. That gauge was already at 10 inches by that time. So really the storm before Helene brought more rain than Helene did. Either the thunderstorm or Helene alone would have been moderate, but manageable flash floods, but the two back to back was insane.

The trouble is that a fad doesn’t have to be functional to be used by short-sighted trend chasers as a justification to make cuts. How many jobs did we see outsourced to India in a way that didn’t even come close to matching the quality of the people laid off? The people who make the decision to replace jobs with ai systems will loudly declare success and move on to their next role before the long-term consequences are fully realized.

  • Black holes don’t swallow everything around them for the same reason that the sun hasn’t swallowed all the planets. Outside of the event horizon, gravity still works normally and the fact that it’s a singularity doesn’t really matter. Gravitational capture usually involves multiple objects, because the trajectory has to get nudged for a collision to happen. A gaseous body collects mass at a faster rate than a black hole with the same mass.
