Let me preface this with: Rittenhouse is a shithead and his politics are shit. But: have you watched the videos? If you’ve got a gun and someone tries to grapple with you, that is now a life or death situation. If you let them take your gun, you could very well be dead. It’s not a surprise that the jury acquitted him. Both shootings were demonstrably self-defense. I’m sick of us lefties falling for the same type of knee-jerk propagandistic nonsense the right always falls for.

I think it depends on where you live. I get almost no Christian conservatives, but I live in Seattle, so they’re pretty rare here.

One thing I’ve been annoyed with after switching to Firefox is the iffy password manager performance. It’s so common for it not to remember a password that it should, or, weirdly, for it to only remember the password once I’ve typed the whole username in and hit tab.

Here in the US I once went to the optometrist to get a new glasses prescription. While there I mentioned I was getting some new floaters in my eye and a little weird brightness. They took a look and found a tear in my retina, which can threaten your vision if you don’t get it taken care of quickly. My insurance company utterly refused to allow me to just schedule an appointment with the opthalmologist. First, I had to wait two weeks to see my general practitioner, then schedule an opthalmologist appointment after. It was three weeks before I saw a doctor who could fix the tear in my retina. Luckily it did not detach, but it absolutely could have.

Our piece of shit health insurance system just about half-blinded me for profit. Do not implement our monstrous system. It boggles my mind that British people would ever even think about it.

Only three jobs?

I’ve been working every day since January. Every weekday, every weekend day, every day. But finally on June 15th I’ll be down to one remote job and can go sailing for a few weeks straight. I’ve finally sort of got my finances in reasonable shape, I’ve paid off my car, and have a little breathing room.

Lucretius (a follower of Epicurus) pointed out that if you can’t be content with just existing, getting more out of life won’t actually make you happy. Yeah, being a wage slave sucks, and we need to liberate ourselves. But we also have to learn to just be happy with being, or we’ll always be stuck running away from ourselves.

Yeah I agree with this. There are always going to be parties, as long as different classes in society have different interests. Better to make them more representative than try to do away with them.

The real dumb thing about Washington was that he foresaw the danger of parties (not that hard, considering England had had parties for over a century by then) but thought just warning people not to do it would suffice to stop their formation.

There isn’t much analogy with kosher practices. Do you know the explicit religious purpose of the hijab? It’s to maintain one’s modesty so as not to tempt men. Fuck that. Men are responsible for their own behavior. The religious purpose of the hijab is straightforward victim-blaming sexism. I won’t support a conservative, backward, oppressive practice just because it’s done by a member of a persecuted religious minority. That’s not white supremacism, that’s a basic commitment to progressive values.

I’m not saying we should ban it. In a free society people should be able to wear what they want. But we absolutely should not support it either.

Yeah. Accept Muslims and support their rights. But fuck the hijab. No one should wear that sexist trash.
