The “new” insights: lots of people experience it, and it is associated with exposure to loud noises. As has always been known.

Tha actual purpose of this piece: advertise Apple features related to audio/hearing.

While you’re not wrong about the advertising thing, hearing damage from loud noises isn’t the only thing that can cause tinnitus. Iirc, it can also be caused by things like stress or if your jaw muscles are too tense.

Notably not mentioned in the article because it doesn’t lead into a convenient pitch for airpods

The Apple press release (linked at the beginning of the article) mentions it though:

While there’s no guaranteed method to prevent tinnitus given its complex causes, practicing hearing protection and managing stress levels can lower the chances of tinnitus. In the study, participants cited “noise trauma,” or exposure to excessively high levels of noise, as the primary cause of tinnitus (20.3 percent), followed closely by stress (7.7 percent).

          (My emphasis.)

Ah my mistake. Admittedly (and likely intentionally) a brief mention at 8 words within a 500-word piece, but I suppose better than not mentioning it at all. Thanks for highlighting that info and my glancing over its inclusion in the piece.

This isn’t “new insights,” its just some statistics. I’m happy that Apple is gathering this info, but it doesn’t do anything for the people who already have it. As someone with tinnitus, this isn’t worth getting excited over.
