I am posting this because I am ashamed I just found out it existed, and I thought I would subject the rest of my Beehaw friends to the same experience! 😁
The instructions are super simple, Windows Key + . (period) opens up a little overlay which contains Emojis, GIFs, Clipboard, and some other stuff I’m not sure is useful.
Ill end this post with a question for you all:
-What was something you learned about technology FAR later than you SHOULD have?
I have Linux and I have emoji’s in my menu. I like emoji’s, always have.
I had no idea an entire world of FOSS applications were available to me. From operating systems to amazing programs that are very feature rich and well maintained. If you’re unhappy with Windows, I suggest downloading Linux Mint to a USB and giving it a shot. You don’t even need to install anything to test drive the OS. If you like it you can an install the OS next too Windows or do what I did and just yeet that crap right off your hard drive and forget it ever existed.
The last time I downloaded Linux mint to give it a try was the day before they announced the ISO from the official site had been injected with malicious code. Bad timing for my interest in using Linux, lol.
It’s been a long time since I’ve given Linux much of an opportunity, I think I will give Mint a try.
It sounds like you are talking about running it in a virtual desktop first, dual booting with my current Windows OS. Is that accurate?
Yeah, it will run live right off the USB. You may need to configure some of your BIOS settings prior to running it. I suggest disabling secure boot if it’s giving you any issues. Linux has come a really long way since I last interacted with it too and if you want to play around with some neat things here are some recommendations:
Open up the terminal and input
sudo apt install cmatrix
. It’s a Matrix effect that looks super cool. I’ll show you a screenshot of mine.I’m also a big fan of Flameshot, it’s a really powerful screenshot tool. I use it for work all the time and it’s really helpful. If you’re looking for games, Steam and proton have come a really long way. I’m also a big fan of OpenTTD and Wesnoth.
If you have any questions just hit me up, I’m not an expert but I know my way around a terminal a bit.
That screenshot made me smile immediately, I love stuff that adds character like that.
Thank you for the advice, I’m planning on digging into this a bit tonight once the kids are sleeping, and I might just take you up on that offer if I think of any questions!
