Mostly another setup episode this week. It does feel a little weird that Makoto and Co. are essentially letting the city burn down around them while they don’t really do too much to stop it. However, there is a strategy here, and I think it shows a moment of character growth for Makoto. He isn’t simply running off and being the hero, he is diligently making sure that he gets everybody to ask him to be the hero first. It makes his exploits much more public and instills a debt that he is owed by those in power. If he were to simply exterminate all the monsters without being asked, then he wouldn’t get as much benefit out of it.
I had forgotten about the Mio/Ilumgand scene from back when I read the WN, so that was a bit of a surprise for me. The way that Ilumgand was content that Kuzunoha hated him so much only for Mio to say that he doesn’t think of Ilumgand at all gave me Don Draper vibes for sure. I mean, she is telling the truth, Makoto even completely forgot about Ilumgand for a big chunk of the academy arc this season. Mio wasn’t done though, she also unintentionally burned Hibiki pretty badly. Hang in there Hibiki, you are the true shonen protagonist of this series. You will get your moment I am sure.
Next episode is when we should see the Kuzunoha Trading Company come alive, so I am looking forward to it. @rikka@ani.social:
Strangely the screenshot doesn’t load for me. Is there some problem with the server?
I think Makoto doesn’t care much about hyumens of the world apart from a few acquaintances (Toa’s party, the Rembrants and his students). I forgot why he even set up his company in the first place. His customers certainly need it more than it needs them.
Mio: the Hibiki I know is so weak, cannot possibly be the summoned hero.
I tried to upload a new screenshot and it just kept timing out, so I don’t know if there is an issue right now or not. Instead, I just threw a new screenshot on the selfhosted image host I use for all the video clips I post to the community. It should be visible now even if there are issues with the pict-rs container for ani.social.
Visible now, thank you.
Could’ve gone with an Estelle shot to farm that sweet, sweet clickbait😝
I would be lying if I said I didn’t think about it, but I didn’t like how she was framed in her shots for the screenshot. I have often found doing these episode screenshots that shots that work fine when it is animated might not be great when it is a still. For Estelle, she was often only partially in frame (usually a panning shot of her) and usually way off-center. That just doesn’t make a good thumbnail when it is cropped and resized square.
I just swapped to a different screenshot since it seemed like the previous one was being a bit buggy and not displaying correctly.
I knew as soon as I saw the preview post last week that I was going to have to prepare myself again for the comments on lack of action.
At least there was at least two fights this time, and both involving the main cast! Hey, that’s something, right?
I’m trying to imagine what people were thinking when Ilumgand was talking about helping the hero and not interfering with Makoto. Cliché second chance? Then Mio is just “nah”
It’s interesting Tomoe says that Root wouldn’t be able to scratch Makoto. I feel like we’re missing a lot of internal dialogue here, I couldn’t quite tell from Root’s reaction what he thought of that, did he just say “Interesting” or something? I feel like I remember there being a lot more thoughts in the source material, but maybe I’m wrong. Just feel like definitely feeling the weight of trying to adapt this as there’s probably a lot of thoughts being skipped.
Definitely a lot of internal dialogue being skipped in this adaptation, especially Makoto’s. However, I don’t really remember this Tomoe and Root conversation being too important, but I also don’t remember it very well so I could just be forgetting the importance. At least, not as important as the conversation they had after Root had tried to explain traveling between worlds to Makoto (earlier this season).
I had completely forgotten about Mio coming back to mop up Ilumgand, so that was a nice surprise on my part. I had also forgotten about the importance of him saving those girls in the pleasure district until his inner monologue about a brothel owner reminded me about who that is. The story is coming back to me as it has been quite a while since I read the WN.
I think that next episode is when things are going to be a bit more exciting as Kuzunoha now has been formally asked to intercede.
I guess it might be a good thing I’m not a director since I probably do focus on unimportant things. I just sort of always got the feeling from the source, and I don’t think this is a spoiler it’s just my feelings, that Root was a very conceited / egotistical kind of person. Maybe I just hallucinated that, because that’s where I’m coming from is when the anime doesn’t match my expectations of the character. Like I would’ve expected him to respond to being told someone is stronger than him with “You always were a kidder, Tomoe”. I don’t know, I feel like he’s not really matching with my expectations, especially since people are calling him Luto instead. Like, did they really change that? Why?! It’s like taking someone named Kuro that dresses all in black and being like “Actually, we’ll translate their name as Jeffrey. Close enough”. /rant
Is there any meaning to his name? His name is ルト in Japanese, I’m not aware of it having anything to do with the English word root which should be ルート.

He’s certainly done some shady stuff in the past, like hyumen experiments in his lab. I’m not sure he is evil, probably is outside of humen/hyumen morality. He seems to be opposed to the goddess. Were ancient dragons indigenous to the world? I forgot the lore.
