In the first, an old and dying billionaire funds a private space expedition after some scientists identify a location in ancient scribings on earth, hoping the makers can prevent his death. The expedition is actually successful and they find a ship full of dead engineers (the big elephant men) with one being alive in stasis. They wake him up, but it turns out they aren’t very fond of their creation and were on their way to exterminate us.
In the second film we see david (essentially the creator of the xenomorphs) exterminate a planet inhabited by the engineers using their own weapon.
Granted they could still delve deeper into the subject, perhaps explaining why they first created humanity and then decided that we must be purged again. Maybe they still do a third prequel movie for that.
The prequel movies dabbled a bit in that.

Damn, I’ve got some catching up to do.
Apparently, Jesus was a member of their race and they’re pissed we killed him. Yes, I’m serious.
