I had an apartment and then a new neighbor moved in next door. She put her dog in a cage that was in her bedroom closet. That bedroom closet was on the wall opposite my headboard side of my bed. Of course, when she went to work that dog would bark all day. I attempted to complain to the apartment manager but guess what happened? Nothing happened because that apartment manager also had a dog that she put in a cage and kept in her apartment while she was away.
In a different apartment I was on the ground floor. There was a lady above me who would let her dog do its business on her concrete patio which was above mine and then she would sweep it over the edge until my patio below looked like a minefield of dog turds.
Dogs need yards and should not be locked up in a cage or in an apartment nor should their barking invade the space of others.
If you own a dog, live in an apartment, and the noise from that dog’s barking is inside the apartments of your neighbors then you are a shitty inconsiderate person!

Yep. Had a dog for ten years in an apartment. When I left he would lounge around, drag himself to the balcony door, check out the weather, go back to the couch, sleep a while and generally chill until I came back. Why would I stuff him into a crate?
I have a couple of dogs on an acreage roaming all day. One of the dumb shits still gets bored sometimes and tries to chew through an outdoor chair leg, or rips the hell out of her bed/food bowl.
I don’t blame them for the cage thing with that in mind, but personally think it’s cruel and the destruction is just part of dog ownership. I tag it as “I should have bought more things to keep her entertained”.
My neighbors initially left their dog free in their house when they went out. They came home one day to find their sofa torn entirely to shreds. That dog is now always crated when they’re out.
Proper crate training is actually a good thing, and dogs can be very comfortable with it. My wife and I have fostered dozens of greyhounds over the years, all of them having come from race tracks. When they’re raised to race they spend a lot of time in crates, including sleeping, eating, etc. They quickly realize that their crate is a safe space where they can relax, and not worry about the other dogs. All the greyhounds that we eventually adopted would practically run into a crate if we set one up, then curl up and go to sleep.
