Constitutional free speech is a double edged sword. It is abused by bad people to push divisive and harmful views. I would be happy if we weakened defamation laws to allow more criticism of the rich and powerful and level the playing field. That doesn’t require a bill of rights. First stop the bullshit protection of companies like Woodside and Santos from criticism by environmental protesters. Stop bullshit defamation suits aimed at silencing the media and other legitimate criticism.

I would use a bill of rights to protect diversity including such things as race and gender and give the law a bigger stick to go after bigoted “free speech absolutist” types who demand freedom for themselves then use slapp suits against critics. If freedom of speech was added it would have to be in a heirarchy like Asimov’s robot laws such that freedom of speech didn’t override the freedom from bigotry and hate speech. Half the people calling for free speech would fuck off then because they only want to use it as a license to be arseholes.
