    Me being a grown being, I have yet to discover a foot fabric tube going missing. I really don’t know, if this is one of those myths that don’t actually happen or if it just doesn’t happen with my particular washing machine, foot tubes or general lack of chaos.

      The amount of socks I have lost amount to such a large volume it seems impossible. They should be covering every surface in my house. I should be drowning in socks.

      I have lost tons of socks. Once I started doing my own laundry, I made sure my socks stayed in my own laundry cycle and not the family pool. Did not lose a sock again. Though there were a couple close calls where I almost left a sock behind in the dryer (or in one case, the washer, because it stuck to a wall somehow.)

      I blame my dog.

      I never had this happen either when I lived alone. Now that I have a partner and they do the laundry most of the time socks have started to go missing. But I’m not sure what she does differently. It is the same washing machine.

        They are not worthy of wielding the great machine, a sacrifice must be made and your foot armor will serve as one

      I usually buy multiple pairs of the same sock and I inevitably wind up with just one lonely sock remaining :/

      It’s a real thing.

      Socks (and similarly small clothes) can slip between the rubber seals of the drum and end up in the inside where they degrade over time due to heat and motion.

      Some models and clothes are more prone to this than others.

        Children’s socks are especially prone to this (and then clogging the machinel. I’ve started putting them in one of those bags for washing bras.

          Dunno about bra-bags, but I use empty pillows (my gf uses nets for vegetables) for delicate or small clothes

        Growing up our drier had an issue and when the repair man opened it up we found all the missing socks. The dryer only ate a sock once or twice a year but after so many years there was a good number in there.

        Wow. My mum bought me ten pairs of proper socks after I was done growing, which was at least ten years ago and I’m still using (all of) those.

      I think I lost one in college once, in the dorm wash room. Other than that, never. I also never understood this.

      Some people just lose them, but they actually do get sucked into the drains of some washing machines. I’ve had to pull them out when they get stuck in there before.

          I can’t be doing with all the rituals to do with washing clothes. I just want a machine which I stick everything in and it’s got a big button on the front it says “make go”.

      I’m pretty sure my washing machine eats them.

      What happens is you put them to wash then you get all the clothes out of the washer and hang them up on the dryer, invariably you miss a few socks and leave them in there because they’re stuck at the back in the dark, and they go through if you loads them before you find them again.

      They don’t disappear but you do misplace them.

      Also the missus seems to struggle with the clean pile of clothes on the floor and the dirty pile of clothes on the floor and tends to wash things that have already been washed and I haven’t worn yet.
