My younger kid told me about an idea of a hero based around luck. I thought it sounded like a fun thought experiment.

Maybe they could have an ability that causes allies’ random bullet spread to skew toward enemies instead of in random directions for a short period.

My kid suggested they might prevent death from damage-over-time effects.

Are there other RNG elements that could be manipulated by a luck ability?

I think literally affecting RNG is not a really good game design for OW. The way I see it, there shouldn’t really be any meaningful RNG in the game.

However, a theme of luck/miracles/changing the future could be fun to design around. Like your kid said, some kind of death-prevention ability would fit, even if it was fully consistent and predictable from the player’s perspective.

More aggressive options could be some sort of auto-aim/projectile homing ability. Or, as a utility, detecting (“guessing”) enemy presence through walls. Or even “finding” resources out of thin air, like spawning temporary healthpacks.

While I don’t think using RNG is a good mechanic (and in Overwatch, most ‘random’ things aren’t actually very random - bullet spread is actually based on a set pattern, and the only randomness is the rotation of that pattern.

However there are interesting ways you could dress up ‘randomness’ as an actual game mechanic that’s reproducible - causing allies to have a slight bullet magnetism (not full on aimbot, but a bit like a ‘lite’ version of S76’s ult) could be an interesting idea to play around with.

Another option could be to force things to bounce, and otherwise orient themselves onto a specific target - though I guess this might be more along the lines of someone controlling magnetism than ‘luck’ per se.
