My suggestion would be to add a control there. Everyone will inevitably find that.
The existing control, long press on the tab bar, can remain. It’s a good shortcut, and as long as it is just a shortcut and not the ONLY way, it’s okay for it to be less discoverable.
I think that’s a bad design. That important feature should be easily discoverable.
