Hi and thanks for running this instance.
As devops/infra guy, few technical things sprang into mind:
- are there any (hw) redundancies at server side?
- what happens if current admin gets hit by a bus?
- if instance dies permanently, what happens to its users and posts?
- is the vps virtual or real?
- if the vps is compromised or something explodes, are there any off-site backups?
Thanks.
is the vps virtual or real?
It is virtual. This instance isn’t so huge that there would be need for a dedicated server.
if the vps is compromised or something explodes, are there any off-site backups?
Backups are taken twice a day at 06:00 and 18:00, and they are off-site.
Out of curiosity, what do you use for the backups?
Currently a Python backup script I made myself based on what is said about backups in the documentation.
I’m not trying to be overly dismissive of your concerns, but aren’t most instances run on some dude’s spare computer for shits and giggles? I wouldn’t expect continuity or risk management at all. But also, nothing is lost but a little convenience if one disappears.
Two admins recently gave up and shut down their servers, which is another thing to consider. Some kind of export / archive tool might be useful. Not sure if importing would be a thing due to resources it would take, but who knows.
Might want to hit up the matrix space? I already chatted with our admin about how federation works in a matrix dm.
Actually this made me think. Wouldn’t it be cool to be able to download the data of the instance? Like an automated system that has for example the last backup of the instance and there you could download it. That could be used to preserve user data if the host gets hit by a bus.
