They often get promising candidates early in their career and that allows them to turn the screws when they rise through the ranks. It’s why Oxford and Cambridge was (still is?) a good hunting ground for the KGB. So I imagine they’ve got their hooks into people in Labour too.
Hence the question mark - I imagine the FSB/SVR still keep hooks in the water, as do many secret services (wouldn’t be surprised if the Yanks were doing it too).

The KGB stopped existing nearly 32 years ago now along with the USSR so it would be a bit surprising if it was still looking to recruit at Oxbridge…
