I’m sure I’ll want to upgrade some of my clubs as they aren’t in the best shape, and I don’t have a pitching wedge, but excited to see how things go. I bought a new bag (Calloway Fairway 14), and some soft balls already.

Any advice to make me not look completely clueless or gear tips would be appreciated!

Don’t feel like you need every club in a bag. You’re not going to hit a 4 iron any different to a 5 iron to begin with, and that’s if you can get a ball off the ground with either of them at all.

Try a few different clubs - if you struggle with some more than others then put them away for now and focus on what feels right. Work on your swing with clubs that feel good - don’t demoralise yourself trying to swing more difficult clubs when you’re still learning how to swing any club.

Once you have a somewhat consistent swing you’ll find using other clubs easier, though you don’t need a full set to play a game - when I first started I went out with a pencil bag slung over my back with a driver, a 9 iron, a wedge and a putter and that’s it, and it made starting to play easy. As you’ll get better you’ll realise where you need other clubs will help you get into positions that help your game, but at the start when it’s just about getting to the hole by hook or crook, the other stuff is just noise.
