As an example: I was doing a search for the best sesame substitute today. Everything that came up was things like, “11 Best Sesame Substitutes,” and I know for a fact that just about everything they suggested tastes nothing like sesame. Just another site trying to get hits. So I added reddit.com into my search parameters and immediately got some decent answers.

I really hate that I have to do that to get anything useful, but there is a ridiculous amount of useful information on Reddit. I hope the fediverse gets to this point as well one day.

Anway, just needed to vent. Lemmy on.

    Oh, you mean tahini. Yeah, I don’t make hummus often enough to keep a jar of tahini from going bad. So I almost never have it on hand. Which means when making hummus I either don’t add a tahini replacement at all, or I use an equal or lesser amount of unsweetened peanut butter, which gives that same mild nuttiness, IMO.

    So when you’re making hummus, blend everything else and leave the tahini or its substitute until last, and then taste it before adding anything else. You might like it exactly as is, without the sesame.

      Lol, totally cool. Maybe one day in the future, when Lemmy is full of content, someone will do a search for sesame substitutes and find this post.

      And thanks! I really like the flavor and texture tahini imparts. I’m actually allergic to peanuts, but another nut butter might work out for me.

        Arrrgh! I can’t believe I just recommended that to you then, lol. My sincerest apologies.

        Yes, another nut butter should do exactly the same thing, the less sweet and more “nutty” tasting it is the better. If you’ve ever tasted tahini (ground sesame) out of the jar you know what to aim for. Also, if you just want that sesame flavor and you have the oil on hand, toasted or even straight sesame oil is very flavorful and you can easily add a few drops to a teaspoon along with the olive oil, decreasing the olive oil in your recipe by the same amount if it’s more than a few drops. Hummus is infinitely customizable. Good luck.

        Now I want hummus, lol.

          Haha no worries! I am allergic to a lot of foods, and there’s no way you could have known. I’m actually also allergic to chickpeas, too 😂 so I make hummus out of white beans and/or fava beans. Tastes very good.

          I was originally curious because I thought it might be fun to start a supper club for people with food allergies. Sesame allergies are very common.

            I made “hummus” out of black beans once; it was excellent, and takes extra seasonings (lime, cumin, chili powder) like a champ. I bet your non-chickpea hummus is fabulous too. Good luck with your supper club!
