I work in a relatively retail environment that I am in control of. Daily some shitty customer makes the stupid observation “It sure is quiet in here.” To which I always have to respond “If they made me play music I’d kill myself” or some such non-sense to drive home just how much retail radio makes me want to end all of existence after 10 years, and they still don’t realize that retail radio tempo is chosen specifically to affect purchasing habits of customers.
I have ADHD and the sensory overload of dealing with shitty customers and shitty music makes me want to burn entire cities to the ground.
I appreciate when stores don’t play music. You can’t please everyone and so you really shouldn’t be playing anything.
I’m sick of the top 40 radio pop hits being spammed everywhere. If anything, I wish we would go back to the 80’s/90’s use of jazz instead. I miss hearing Kenny G in supermarkets. Though, I’m sure supermarket workers of that time feel the same way you do.
So just keep it quiet.
Nothing makes me want to leave a store more than hearing some overplayed pop blaring over the store’s speakers.
I worked at a cannabis dispensary and it was probably the best job I’ll have ever worked for a number of reasons, but one of them was that the cashier got full control over the music. Whoever worked the till got to choose exactly what music was playing, exactly how loud, or if they even wanted music at all. It was such an incredible blessing.
