  • More than a decade in. I started with WordPress and PHP+jQuery. Then moved through the entire JS Framework suite of angular, react, Vue, svelte… I’m not as exhausted as the author. But I’m pretty tired. All the JS projects require frequent maintenance. Where the PHP project gathering dust on PHP 5.6, it only took me a few days to bring it up to PHP 8.2 and update all the libraries. It would be 10x as long were it a JA Framework.

I blame bootcamps who adopted React and only taught that. Watching devs hate on JS because they decided to do web development in React. Not to mention the many many convoluted patterns in React over the past 8 years makes it incredibly challenging to update projects.

  • This is a very rude question, but on this subject of being lean, I looked up your 990, and you pay yourself less than … well, you pay yourself half or a third as much as some of your engineers.

Yes, and our goal is to pay people as close to Silicon Valley’s salaries as possible, so we can recruit very senior people, knowing that we don’t have equity to offer them. We pay engineers very well. [Leans in performatively toward the phone recording the interview.] If anyone’s looking for a job, we pay very, very well.

But you pay yourself pretty modestly in the scheme of things.

I make a very good salary that I’m very happy with.

That’s pretty cool. But knowing the number would matter.

  • As a supporter of getting professional help like therapy, I get kinda frustrated at the whole process.

My company has two options: a in-company therapist and TalkSpace.

The in-company therapist is a nice lady but I don’t like that her boss is HR, where I have the most problems with. She’s also technically challenged and uses the company storage to save reports. You know who else has access to the company storage? IT. And I chill with those guys and absolutely know what they can see.

I had two really good therapists who quit TalkSpace in a year. But then, five people who were more like guidance counselors. They didn’t have any credentials in their profile outside of basic social work, and didn’t give me anything better than (ugh) an AI therapist.

Honestly I have to pay out of pocket for therapy now.

  • You’re not kidding. Public school in the city.

There were so many dumb things I had to memorize. Periodic table. Solar system moon and planets. Multiplication table.

Even worse is the people who see memory as intelligence because of that BS. I remember working at a office and the boss made Steve, the guy who knew 15 digits of Pi, his right hand man. Steve is currently still working there. Congrats Steve your superior memory apparently can’t get you out of your deadend job.
