Warner Bros. said Thursday that it will release more films in its The Lord of the Rings franchise, the first of which is still in script development but is planned to be released in 2026.
I really enjoyed the first 3 movies, couldn’t get behind The Hobbit at all. I don’t have high hopes for this.
Hobbits were fun mid-tier movies, if you don’t bring in your expectations from lotr
Yea I think that might be what ruined it for me. The bar was raised pretty high with LOTR, and The Hobbit was my favourite book growing up.
Why do they assume we are all huge fans of Gollum? Like that dogshit videogame from last year wasn’t enough
in its The Lord of the Rings franchise
Imagine being that callous. I will never consider anything WB does with it to be anything other than fanfiction desperate for attention. The Tolkiens’ work is finite and absolute.
Shouldn’t be made.
Why?
In exhibit number one, we have a dogshit billion-dollar fanfiction titled Rings of Power.
In exhibit two, a game that nobody wanted, around events that didn’t happen, with characters nobody cares about, that shouldn’t have been made: Gollum.
Sure, but results in the past give no guarantees about how successful a future endeavour can be.
I’m not trying to take a side here, but just reserving judgement.
I’m not talking about success but quality and respect for the source material. Rings of Power could’ve raked in all the money in the world and made every self-titled critic that wasn’t even alive in 2003 cream their jorts, and it would still be a fucking travesty.
In case it’s not obvious, I have a deep loathing for current year WB.
The farther it gets from the source material, the worse it gets. There is no source material to cover what they want to do here.
While I do agree that Tolkien’s work is exceptional, The Wheel of Time shows us that studios have no problems with fucking up good source material. So it can probably go either way
so what? It will either be terrible or interesting. Either way, we, personally, have nothing to lose from this being made and a lot to win if it’s not terrible.
We have a lot to lose because it’s taking money away from other projects that aren’t likely to suck.
There isn’t a fixed budget somewhere that all these projects are competing for. Whomever is financing this movie is not going to finance whatever projects you’re talking about. However, it might just be that if this is a success and brings a profit and visibility, those other smaller projects will get more funds thrown their way.
The dipshit exec responsible for milking Gollums flacid tits will make more money if they were to be fired than most of us will in a few lifetimes combined.
Goddamn. I read this a few days ago elsewhere and seriously thought it was a parody.
WB is going to do to this franchise what it has done to the Harry Potter and the DC (well DC had a couple decent ones) and take what was good and run it straight into the ground.
Had they said they were going to do the Silmarillion or the like I might had been excited but nope just more bullshit.
Literally who is their target for these things? They could ask he fandom and get a ranked list of 100 ideas that would make better games and movies.
You know what no one has thought? “Let’s just watch the opening of Two Towers where they’re scrambling through rocks”. No one wants to just watch (or play) gollum. Give us Gondor, big fights, deep lore, ffs.
The real title is The Hunt for Red Gollum.
