The Trudeau government will cease future arms exports to Israel even though a motion passed Monday by the House of Commons that called for such action is non-binding, says Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly.

“It is a real thing,” said Joly, speaking to the Star briefly on the morning after a majority of Liberal MPs and cabinet voted in support of a modified NDP resolution that some Jewish groups say undermines Israel’s right to defend itself against Hamas.

The controversial multi-pronged resolution sought to toughen Canada’s stance on the Middle East conflict.

Oh so like, one gun? When I think of Canada, a well supplied military doesn’t come to mind. They’re basically riding the wave of “America will protect me”

Canada is responsible for many of the the rules that exist in the Geneva convention. They have a reputation for war crimes and being merciless.

Even if the pop culture version of Canada is about being nice, they’ve got their dark spots.

It’s not about our own under funded military, it’s about the export products. Canada has a sizable arms industry. For example we have exported over 1000 Senator armoured vehicles to Ukraine. We are a project partner in the F35 program as well, which I assume will mean that deal will be grandfathered to allow Israel to continue to receive them. This is unequivocally a good announcement, hopefully it will lead to more nations moving away from supplying the IDF.
