Yes, less qualified pilots that are likely underpaid, that’s what air travel needs. Just rake in the profits until a couple of high profile fatal airline accidents happen, then apologize and let the regulations come back for another decade before doing it again. Whatever the ultimate cost of that ends up being, including court settlements, will almost certainly be less than the profits made in the interim.

And it’s not like we had some recent example of people thumbing their nose at safety only to have their “safety is waste” vessel catastrophically fail… Oh, wait.

These were likely written by the pilot union. It makes it nearly impossible for new pilots to get started while the existing pool of qualified pilots ages out. It’s another one of those things where you have to work for peanuts for years and years to get enough hours to get a decent job while older guys who never had to do all that hold onto the cushy well paid job.

I think you’re misunderstanding the meaning of the statement if you think safely regulations are written for union job security.

The rule was put into place after the Cologne air disaster. Both pilots had more than 1500 hours. There was a series of events that happened because pilots had conflicting information from atc and new equipment. There were no procedures in place as to what a pilot should do if that happens.

i truly do not understand how someone can be so politically inept as Sinema is. all she had to do was be a boring ass Dem and she’ll be in this seat for life but instead she wants to be a maverick corporatist so she’s going to either wash out or get like 12% running the worst independent campaign of all time

And then get hired at 10x her Senate salary by one of the corporations she represented.

right but she could totally do that while still being a boring Dem instead of all the stuff she’s done to this point to piss people off! that’s what makes it confusing, she’s treating this like she has to either Be a Senator or Be a Consultant when like half of even Dem Senators are doing both, lol

The Intercept isn’t reputable? Even now that Greenwald is gone? Perhaps you know something about them I don’t? 🤔

When all you care about is the team color a politician is wearing, this is what you get. It’s what people voted for.

Well the other choice was Martha McSally. At the time, Sinema seemed like a progressive candidate. She’s been incredibly disappointing, but I still think she was better than the other choice.

It’s tiring and very frustrating that we are repeatedly faced with that kind of choice in this system, but we had an anti-LGBT, pro Trump, pro military spending option, or Sinema. I still think she was the better choice in the general election.

Do we have evidence the additional training improves safety? (Honest question.)

Autopilot is a real thing in the air. Airlines are a powerful industry, but that doesn’t make the flight training cabal any less entrenched. At what point does improving technology enable lighter-trained pilots to safely take the helm?

The Hudson River landing wasn’t done by autopilot. Technology is nowhere near being able to replace human pilots.

And if there was only one pilot in the cockpit that would’ve ended badly. We still need two pilots. In the future we might maybe be able to rely on one pilot but thats not today.
