Elon Musk’s social media app changed some bullshit or other

You can care that he’s awful and actively working to worsen our world and still not immerse yourself pointlessly in news about his awful he is

Did you miss the rash of articles in the past few days about how he was actively interfering in the Ukraine war operations? That LITERALLY gives him influence on par with tiny countries / states.

do you think that elon musk does not have a large effect on society? why do you not care about things that affect society? shouldn’t you care? shouldn’t you be less selfish? if you only care about yourself, then maybe don’t engage with social media.

If you buy an electric car, his money and influence can affect where and how fast you can charge your car. Technology Connections has a video on electric car chargers that touches on this.

If you study the stars, or even if you’re outside looking at the sky, you might see Starlink satellites above you.

If you’re in a country that relied on twitter for public reach, you might not be able to read your government’s message because you have to log in to read it. I think the Dutch had an issue with that recently.

If you have friends and family, coworkers, local leaders, government employees who use twitter (or you use it yourself), the way the site promotes information will influence their decision making, values, opinions, etc.

For some of these, you might argue that you don’t live in this country or another, but countries influence each other. Weed is illegal in India because they needed to make friends with USA for example. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t follow everything everyone rich does in case they might do something I don’t like, I’m just answering your question. I don’t have a good opinion of him, and for the most part I’m indifferent to what he does, but he can and does influence our lives.

To add to this, If you’re a Ukrainian child in one of the cities recently shelled by the Russian navy you probably won’t care much - you’re too fucking dead.

Musk decided he wasn’t happy with Ukraine taking out elements of the Russian navy, so he just disabled starlink in that area, stopping the attack on the ships that went on to target civilian populations.

Musk has unparalleled visibility over the lines of battle in that war, and the power to shut off most communications there. He’s using that visibility and power to support an autocratic enemy of the United States that’s invading a sovereign democracy. The only thing preventing him being tried for treason is the lack of a formal declaration of war between the US and Russia. Did I mention that he’s chasing US defence contracts, and is the US’s only ticket to space?

          No big deal.

As far as I can tell, caring about any rich and powerful asshole beyond deciding how to vote once every two years has never once helped my life improve in any measurable way. I’ve already thought Elon was an asshole for over a year now. Like Trump, there’s literally nothing he’s likely to do that will change my mind on him, so I rather not hear about him ever again. With narcissists like them, the best that could happen is that they be ignored in the public arena except for people learning the punishing consequences of their selfish actions.

I’m not comparing Musk to Hitler. I’m comparing OP to so-called “centrists” that align far-right when push comes to shove.

    Right.

There’s plenty of billionaires fucking our shit up but so many people seem to have a hate boner exclusively for Musk.

That’s mostly because he insists on opening his dumb mouth.

He could have just shut up and focused on spending his effectively unlimited money, and would mostly have flown under the radar like the rest of them. Instead, he’s made himself a lolcow and lightning rod for (justified) hate, burning tens of billions of dollars in the process.

He’s a walking mockery of the concept of the meritocracy that conservatives love so much.

I don’t know about that, if anything, I think I have more respect for someone that is openly a cunt than for someone that is a cunt behind my back.

Musk has no idea who you are - it’d be difficult for him to be a cunt behind your back. This isn’t an interpersonal issue - he’s spent tens of billions to buy twitter to amplify his voice.

…but all of this misses the point - maybe just don’t be a cunt.
