It’s a great app, personally I use this fork that has Sponsorblock built in also: https://github.com/polymorphicshade/NewPipe
This is what I run as well, really unfortunate the Newpipe devs decided to gatekeep the sponsorblock feature.
Cannot wait for their rewrite (https://github.com/TeamNewPipe/NewPipe/discussions/10118), hope they will be more clean, battery-efficient, and feature-rich.
It’s brilliant. I just can’t wait until it syncs with Freetube. Then I’m living the dream
You can try piped. You can register a online account. Or you can selfhost viewtube or invidious.
NewPipe is a great app, it really makes watching YouTube so much easier. Even though some things are out of date or kinda broken (they’re rewriting NewPipe because of this), I find it works well enough for me to watch videos from my subscriptions.
One thing I just recently learned - NewPipe can cast to Kodi, but it needs a bit of setup.
First, you’re going to need kodi running somewhere (FireTV Stick, Android TV, …) and (currently) update the YouTube Addon to the latest Alpha.
(I installed it via the following repo: http://ftp.fau.de/osmc/osmc/download/dev/anxdpanic/repositories/repository.yt.testing_unofficial-2.0.5.zip )
Also, you’ll need kore or yatse installed on your phone / tablet.
Then you’ll need to allow remote control in the kodi settings for the app you just installed…
And lastly you’ll have to go to the NewPipe settings (Audio/Video) and toggle “show >play with kodi<”.
So… It’s quite a bit of work. But I guess if you’re using NewPipe, you’re not adverse to some fiddling.
So I watch a lot of YouTube with generated subtitles/cc. Any chance of that with newpipe?
Yes, it works. When you’re in a video there’s a ^ in the top right corner that’s got settings for captions and a few other things. Also under the apps settings you can toggle it to use the Android OS captions system that has more options for contrast and font size
App is super clean but it sorely needs gesture support
not sure what this means but im pretty sure you could already use gestures in the video player
