Solar storm on Thursday expected to make Northern Lights visible in Maryland, other states

Northern Lights occur when a magnetic solar wind slams into the Earth's magnetic field and causes atoms in the upper atmosphere to glow. The lights appear suddenly and the intensity varies.

If you missed them back in April, here’s another chance this coming Thursday, local weather permitting. Most likely looking towards the Northern horizon between 10:00PM and 2:00AM. Probably a chance to also see something on Wednesday, 7/12 evening as well, but currently estimated to be less intense than on those on Thursday.
